Correlation between API 20 STREP and multiplex PCR for identification of Enterococcus spp. isolated from Brazilian foods BJM
Gomes,Bruna C.; Esteves,Carolina T.; Palazzo,Izabel C.V.; Darini,Ana Lúcia C.; Franco,Bernadette D.G.M.; Martinis,Elaine C.P. de.
We evaluated the suitability of API 20 STREP and multiplex PCR to speciate 52 Enterococcus spp. obtained from Brazilian foods. A high percentage of isolates (78.9%) presented discrepant results between evaluated tests. Similar results were obtained for six E. faecalis and five E. faecium. The PCR multiplex was more effective than API 20 STREP for complete identification of the isolates.

Enterococcus spp. Resistant to Multiple Antimicrobial Drugs and Determination of Fecal Contamination Levels in Mangrove Oysters (Crassostrea rhizophorae) BABT
Rubião,Cynthia Annes; Franco,Robson Maia; Mesquita,Eliana de Fátima Marques de; Miguel,Marco Antonio Lemos; Cabral,Claudius Couto; Fonseca,Ana Beatriz Monteiro.
ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to determine and compare the Most Probable Number (MPN) of Total Coliforms (TC), Escherichia coli and Enterococcus spp. and to characterize the antimicrobial resistance profiles of Enterococcus spp. isolated from oysters collected in the Barra de Guaratiba Mangrove, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The enumeration of E. coli has been used to indicate fecal contamination and hygienic-sanitary conditions of bivalve molluscs. Enterococci are capable to transfer several antimicrobial resistance genes to pathogenic bacteria, including those from Gram-negative group. The oysters were bought from local fishermen and a total of 123 individuals were analyzed. The TC, E. coli and Enterococcus spp. MPN mean were 26,300/100 g, 3,260/100 g and...

Prevalence and phenotypic characterization of Enterococcus spp. isolated from food in Brazil BJM
Camargo,Carlos Henrique; Bruder-Nascimento,Ariane; Lee,Sarah Hwa In; Fernandes Júnior,Ary; Kaneno,Ramon; Rall,Vera Lúcia Mores.
We evaluated the frequency of enterococci from food and found 95.2% of positivity, being E. faecium and E. faecalis the most frequent species. High-level streptomycin resistance was observed, as well as gelatinase and hemolysis activity, showing the potential role of environmental strains as reservoir of virulence and resistance traits.

Quorum sensing in Enterococcus faecium, Enterococcus faecalis and Bacillus cereus strains isolated from ricotta processing Ciência Rural
Fernandes,Meg da Silva; Esper,Luciana Maria Ramires; Kabuki,Dirce Yorika; Kuaye,Arnaldo Yoshiteru.
ABSTRACT: The quorum sensing phenomenon is a process of intra- and inter-species microbial communication involving the production and detection of extracellular signaling molecules. The autoinducer AI-2 has been proposed to serve as a ‘universal signal’ for interspecies communication. This study aimed to evaluate the capability of Enterococcus faecium, Enterococcus faecalis, and Bacillus cereus strains isolated from ricotta processing to produce quorum sensing signalling molecules (AI-2). The strains were evaluated for the presence of the luxS gene using the polymerase chain reaction. AI-2 quorum sensing signalling molecules were measured in relative light units (RLUs) using a luminometer. A total of 74% of E. faecium, 91% of E. faecalis, and 95% of B....

Vertebral Osteomyelitis in Broilers: A Review Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Braga,JFV; Martins,NRS; Ecco,R.
ABSTRACT Locomotor diseases are still a challenge in modern poultry. Vertebral osteomyelitis (VO) is an emerging disease in broilers worldwide. The inflammatory process in the affected thoracic vertebra (T4) and subsequent spinal cord compression leads to clinical signs related to locomotor impairment, inadequate feeding and drinking, and increased mortality in the affected flocks. The pathogenesis of the disease is poorly understood and Enterococcus cecorum is the bacterium most frequently associated with the disease. However, other bacteria such as E. faecalis, E. durans, Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus have been recently detected in cases of the disease, raising questions regarding its etiopathogenesis. As many questions about VO in broilers...
